Growing a Community of Health, Together
In January, after an extensive community consultation process, the Town of Petrolia approved the YMCA’s proposal to assume contracted operation of The Centre.
The YMCA’s interest in operating The Centre is aligned with our mission to build healthy communities and consistent with the Town’s strategic priority to grow a Community of Health in Petrolia.
The YMCAs across Southwestern Ontario has 100 years of experience in community health, fitness, recreation and membership services, and currently serves more than 21,000 participants at 49 locations in the region, including 1 in 5 participants who access the YMCA’s financial assistance program.
Petrolia residents and participants across the region will have access to The Centre through membership and day use passes. The YMCA’s all-inclusive membership model offers all programs and services included in one standard price, including their popular swimming lessons, individual wellness coaching, and group fitness classes.

What's Next: Transition Information
Hiring for all facility and program positions is underway. The YMCA, through an internal Job Fair exclusively for existing Centre staff, received applications for employment from 45 of 58 existing Centre staff and contractors. The YMCA anticipates completing the hiring of staff required for the new Petrolia YMCA from within the existing Centre staff team with a few exceptions where internal candidates could not be secured. The facility's new leadership team, including current Centre staff, will be involved in the selection of the remaining staff team.
To properly transition the facility, the Centre will be closed beginning April 2nd, 2018 but will reopen Monday April 9th at 5:30 a.m.
The Centre has closed for 3 days each year for deep cleaning and maintenance. While the YMCA will close the Centre for a week all deep cleaning and maintenance will be addressed during this period so that no further closures will be required this year.
In closing the Centre for a week to transition to the Petrolia YMCA we understand that members loss of access to programs and services is a concern. For that reason we are happy to provide no charge reciprocal access to existing members of the Centre to any of the YMCAs across Southwestern Ontario's facilities during this transition period. Eligible facilities include:
- YMCA Jerry McCaw Family Centre, Sarnia
- Chatham-Kent YMCA, Chatham
- Lambton Shores YMCA, Forest
- North Middlesex YMCA, Parkhill
- Goderich Huron YMCA, Goderich
- Central Huron YMCA, Clinton
The YMCA’s operating model is designed to reflect the unique needs of the Petrolia community, while keeping with the YMCA’s existing models throughout the region, and is reflective of feedback received during community consultations. While some changes will be made, the YMCA is making every effort to minimize disruption.
All of the following pieces will be available at the Centre on Wednesday March 14th:
- a YMCA membership brochure with rates
- a Week at a Glance program schedule
- an Aquatic Brochure with Red Cross to YMCA swim level conversion
